存在の表し方（There is / There are）

There is / There are の使い分け、否定文・疑問文、場所の置き方を学びます。

説明

there is / there are は、「〜がある / いる」と存在を伝えたいときに使います。

「公園に猫がいる」「冷蔵庫に牛乳がある」のように、ある場所に何かが存在することをはじめて伝えるときに使います。

後ろの名詞の数で使い分けます。単数名詞・数えられない名詞には there is、複数名詞には there are を使います。

文頭の there は場所を表す語ではありません。何があるか・いるかを先に伝え、場所は文末に置きます。

肯定・否定・疑問の3つの形があり、いずれも後ろの名詞の数で is / are を選びます。

There is / There are を使って存在を表せる。

「公園に猫がいる」「冷蔵庫に牛乳がある」のように、相手がまだ知らないものの存在を初めて伝えるときに使います。
主語のように見える there ですが、実は「ここに〜がある」と切り出すための導入語で、後ろの名詞こそが文の主役です。だから be動詞は後ろの名詞の数に合わせます。

解説
water（水）は「1つ、2つ」と数えられない名詞なので、複数形がありません。数えられない名詞は There is を使います。

there is / are の否定文で「〜がない」と伝えられる。

否定文は be動詞の後に not を置いて作ります。単数・不可算名詞には There isn't、複数名詞には There aren't を使います。
会話では isn't / aren't のような短縮形をよく使います。

there is / there are の文は「何が存在するか」を先に示し、「どこに」という場所は文末に置きます。
in / on / under / near などの前置詞で場所を示します。
文頭の there は場所ではなく、存在を導入するための語です。

つまずきポイント集

解説: There is / are は後ろの名詞の数で決まります。many students / two cats のような複数名詞には are、a dog / a book のような単数名詞には is を使います。短縮形 There's を複数名詞に付けてしまうのも同じ間違いです。

解説: 「〜がある」と存在を伝えるときは There is / There are を使います。日本語の「〜が**ある**」を直訳して have / has を使うことはできません。

解説: ここでの「いる／ある」のように、相手がまだ知らないものの存在を初めて伝えるときは There is を使います。It is はすでに話題に出ているものを「それは〜だ」と説明するときの形です。

解説: 場所を表す前置詞は単独では文の終わりに置けません。in / on / under / near の後ろには必ず名詞（my house / the table など）を続けます。
