文法の意味
序数詞を使うと、いくつあるかではなく何番目かを示し、順番・日付・建物の階を伝えられる
個数を表す基数詞と分け、first・second・thirdなどの不規則形と、数字に付けるst・nd・rd・thを覚えます。
使い方・使い分け
順番・日付・階数で序数詞を使う
個数を数える基数詞とは形を分け、順番・日付・階数には序数詞を使います。
- 順番
- 並びの何番目かを表す — the first lesson「最初の授業」
- 日付
- 月の何日かを表す — May 5th「5月5日」
- 階数
- 建物の何階かを表す — the third floor「3階」
文法の形
数字では末尾に st / nd / rd / th を付けます。単語で書くときは、基本の -th と不規則な形・綴り変化を分けて覚えます。
下2桁が11・12・13なら th / それ以外は一の位が1なら st、2なら nd、3なら rd、そのほかは th
11th / 12th / 13th, 21st / 22nd / 23rd / 24th
基数詞 + -th
four → fourth / ten → tenth
one → first / two → second / three → third
1st / 2nd / 3rd
five → fifth / twelve → twelfth / nine → ninth / twenty → twentieth
8は eight → eighth。21は最後だけ変えて twenty-first。

順番・日付・階数には基数詞ではなく序数詞を使う。
よくある間違い
I live on the five floor.
基本の形
I live on the fifth floor.
順番を表すときは序数詞を使います。five は数量を表す基数詞なので、順番には序数詞の fifth を使います。
