文法の意味
相関接続詞を使うと、2つの情報を『両方』『どちらか』『どちらも〜ない』『さらに追加』という関係でまとめられる
2語以上を一組として使い、AとBには名詞どうし・動詞どうしのように同じ形を置きます。
使い方・使い分け
2つの情報をどの関係で結ぶかによって形を選ぶ
含める範囲と否定の有無が違うため、4つを入れ替えることはできません。
- both A and B
- AとBの両方 — Both Tom and Mary came.「トムもメアリーも来ました」
- either A or B
- AかBのどちらか — You can choose either tea or coffee.
- neither A nor B
- AもBもどちらも〜ない — I like neither tea nor coffee.
- not only A but also B
- AだけでなくBも。Bを追加して強調する — She not only sings but also dances.
AとBを同じ形にそろえると、何と何を結ぶかが明確になる
相関接続詞の位置を、実際に比べたい要素の直前へそろえます。

主語に使うときは、表現ごとに動詞の合わせ方が変わる
bothは必ず複数、それ以外は基本的に動詞へ近いBに合わせます。
- both：複数
- Both Tom and Mary are kind.
- そのほか：Bに合わせる
- Neither he nor I am right. — 動詞に近いIに合わせる
- 言い換え
- 一致が不自然に感じるときはNeither of us is ...などに言い換えられる

文法のルール
both A and Bを主語にするときは、複数の動詞を使う。
よくある間違い
Both Tom and Mary is kind.
基本の形
Both Tom and Mary are kind.
both A and B は「両方とも」で複数として扱います。動詞は is ではなく複数の are にします。
either / neither / not onlyを主語に使うときは、基本的に近いBへ動詞を合わせる。
よくある間違い
Neither he nor I are right.
基本の形
Neither he nor I am right.
either / neither / not only … but also では、動詞を近いほうの B に合わせます。B が I なので are ではなく am にします。
not onlyとbut alsoの後ろには、同じ形の要素を置く。
よくある間違い
He not only plays soccer but also basketball.
基本の形
He plays not only soccer but also basketball.
not only と but also の後ろは、同じ形にそろえます。
ここでは名詞 soccer / basketball を結ぶので、plays を外に出して not only soccer but also basketball にします。
neither ... nor自体に否定の意味があるため、don'tなどと重ねない。
補足：not bothは『両方とも〜というわけではない』で、neitherとは意味が違います。
よくある間違い
I don't like neither tea nor coffee.
基本の形
I like neither tea nor coffee.
neither … nor 自体が「どちらも〜ない」という否定を含みます。don't と重ねると否定が二重になるので、don't は付けません。
