代わりを表す表現
要点instead of
文法の意味
instead of は、一方ではなくもう一方を選ぶことを表す表現
前置詞なので、後ろに動詞を続けるときは -ing形にします。
使い方・使い分け
選んだ行動と、選ばなかった行動を一文で言える
行動だけを述べる文に instead of を加えると、何の代わりにそれをしたのかまで伝えられます。
- 行動だけ
- I walked.「私は歩きました」
- 選択も伝える
- I walked instead of taking the bus.「バスに乗らず歩きました」
- ものを選ぶ
- I ordered tea instead of coffee.「コーヒーではなく紅茶を頼みました」
文法の形
後ろには名詞・名詞句または -ing形を続けます。動詞の原形は続けられません。
instead of + 名詞（句）
I ordered tea instead of coffee.
instead of + 動詞-ing
I walked instead of taking the bus.
文法のルール
instead of の後ろに動詞を続けるときは、-ing形にする。
補足：名詞なら、instead of coffee のようにそのまま続けられる。
よくある間違い
I walked instead of take the bus.

instead of の後ろで行動を表すときは -ing形にします。名詞なら coffee のようにそのまま続けられますが、動詞の原形 take は置けません。
instead of の後ろで行動を表すときは、to不定詞ではなく -ing形にする。
